Hello again…just a quick post today to show you how to make air fryer sausage in our favorite appliance. As we all know, sausages are delicious…that juicy, moist meat served with your favorite accompaniment…simply delicious.
We are huge fans of sausage in my home, I like them but my husband absolutely loves them. Whether they are part of a full English breakfast or just a snack on their own, the humble sausage is a fantastic.
Air fryer sausages, not only are they delicious…they are simple to make too. Even a novice can get great results. Regardless if they are standard sausages, the same method applies to air fryer Italian sausages as well as air fryer sausage patties.
Why sausage in air fryer gives the best results
The standard way of cooking sausages is in a skillet…it is the traditional way that we have always faithfully followed. Is it the best way? Not in my opinion.
There are some benefits of course…the smell is delicious and the sizzle of the sausage can be beautiful to hear. However, there are some drawbacks.
Cooking sausages in a skillet makes a mess but the biggest issue is the cook time. If you don’t have a meat thermometer, you can never be sure that it is fully cooked. From a safety perspective, air fryer sausages are the safer option.
That doesn’t mean you have to lose any of the taste…in fact I would argue that cooking a cleaner air fried sausage actually delivers better taste as you are not tasting the cooking oil. This gives a more authentic taste.
If you have never tried air fryer sausage, you will not be disappointed.
Method to cook air fryer sausage
Obviously, it goes without saying that there are lots of brands of sausages and also locally produced sausages too. Regardless of where you get them, they pretty much take the same time to cook.
You may need to add a little time if they are bigger sausages and reduce the time in the air fryer if they are smaller.
Another point to note is that they must NOT be frozen. You need to cook from defrosted.
So, lets get down to the cooking.
Sausages in air fryer method
- Preheat the air fryer at 360F
- Put sausages into the basket
- Cook for 12 – 15 minutes – turn them half way through
- Checked they are cooked through
This method is pretty much fool proof. Obviously, all air fryers cook a little differently so keep an eye on them towards the end. You may need to adjust the overall cooking time. Sausages are great…burnt ones…not so good.
Quick tip: If you want tastier air fryer sausages, do not prick them before you cook them. To prick or not to prick them is a cause of debate…I find not doing so gives tastier results.
How long do you cook sausages in an air fryer?
There are two aspects that you need to consider. The first is your actual air fryer. Some air fryers cook quicker than others, so you may need to reduce the overall cooking time. You should have a good idea how your air fryer performs based on other recipes you have followed.
The other aspect is the thickness of the sausage. Obviously, the bigger the sausage, the longer it takes to cook. The average cooking time is between 12 – 15 minutes.
I always recommend that you use a meat thermometer to ensure your sausages are fully cooked through.
Can I cook Italian sausage in air fryer?
Yes, it doesn’t really matter what type of sausage it is…Italian, German or English…follow the same process as detailed above.
They are cooked exactly the same way as detailed above.
Can I cook smoked sausage in air fryer?
Yes, you should have no issues…follow the method above. It is the sausages that are flavoured so nothing else changes.
What about air fryer sausage patties instead of sausages?
Again, you can cook sausage patties in exactly the same way. They tend to be smaller and thinner so make sure you adjust the cooking time to compensate.
